Investigating Omega-3s and Cognition in the ADNI Study: Help Fund Research for Answers and Clarity

Background: A recent paper published in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease has attracted widespread media attention for its claim that omega‑3 supplementation may accelerate cognitive decline. Given the importance of Alzheimer’s disease, it is understandable that these findings have raised much public concern.

The picture is more complex than the headlines suggest. In 2023, a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition analyzed data from the same study population and reported a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease among individuals using omega-3 supplements. The existence of two contrasting conclusions drawn from the same dataset highlights the need for a more rigorous and comprehensive evaluation of the evidence.

At FARI, we believe scientific questions of this importance deserve a transparent and methodologically robust analysis. To contribute constructively to the discussion, we have prepared a short initial white paper critically examining the current evidence and outlining key limitations of the most recent paper including concerns about the outcomes used, covariates used/not used and widely differing baseline cognitive status.

What we now want to do: To properly resolve the discrepancies between these studies, we are now launching an initiative to conduct a full, independent re‑analysis of the original dataset using more robust, systematic, and comprehensive statistical methods, while also evaluating a broader set of cognitive outcomes.

With your support, we will:
  1. Obtain access to the original trial data
  2. Conduct a rigorous re‑analysis
  3. Prepare and submit a full manuscript for peer‑reviewed publication
  4. Share the findings openly to improve scientific and public understanding

Next steps: We cannot predetermine the outcome of such analysis. We are committed to delivering an unbiased and scientifically rigorous evaluation of the data. Our team has a strong track record in this area. In previous work examining the association between omega‑3 supplementation and atrial fibrillation, our independent re-analysis helped clarify inconsistencies in the literature.

Your contribution will directly support independent scientific research on omega‑3 and cognition and help ensure that future research, clinical guidance, and public communication rest on the strongest possible evidence. We cannot move forward on this important project without your financial support.

To donate – you can use the links below, or you can contact Nathan Tintle (Executive Director), [email protected] and/or Bill Harris (President) [email protected], for additional details of the project, to discuss alternative ways to donate, or to discuss other similar projects we have in development or ideas you may have for future FARI projects.

Our goal is to raise $30,000 by June 30, 2026 so that we can conduct the bulk of the project in summer 2026 and submit the paper for peer review and publication in fall 2026.

All donors will receive monthly updates on our progress
